One of the key elements of the Trump administration’s foreign policy has been increasing aggression against Iran. Trump has cozied up with the Saudi regime, but at the same time, has repeatedly called for the overthrow of Iran’s government. Well, joining us to discuss this is a leading figure in the U.S. peace movement who has been helping to lead the fight to save the Iran Nuclear Deal. I’m speaking with Medea Benjamin, who is a co-founder of the women-led peace movement, Code Pink, and also the author of a book on Iran that expels many of the myths about the country, called Inside Iran: The Real History and Politics of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In the decades since the Iranian Revolution in 1979, bitter relations have persisted between the US and Iran. Why is this? In her latest book, Inside Iran (OR Books), Medea Benjamin explores the complex relationship between the two countries. Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK and the fair trade advocacy group Global Exchange, is one of America’s best-known 21st-century activists. She has won a number of plaudits for her peace activism – including in 2012, the US Peace Memorial Foundation’s Peace Prize; the 2014 Gandhi Peace Award and the 2010 Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Prize. Senate confirmation hearings for Mike Pompeo as President Trump’s nominee for secretary of state took place on Thursday. Pompeo would be Trump’s second secretary of state, following Rex Tillerson’s sacking last month. When Pompeo entered the room for his hearing he was greeted by shouting protesters from Code Pink. The hearing went on to cover major hotspots around the world as well as Pompeo’s views on the Robert Mueller investigation and how he would manage the State Department.
